The village was a highlight for us. Hydra Town, also called Hydra Port, has charming Greek cafes run by locals and people who moved from Athens. Wander past the main street and further into the village for plenty more distinctive, delicious restaurants. We also enjoyed browsing local brands, handmade gifts, and clothes. With no motorized vehicles on the island, getting around means water taxis, walking, or donkeys. We had a great stay at this special property, tucked into its own cove. The complimentary water taxi gets you to the town square in minutes, or it’s 3 km on foot. We met the owner, Arthur, who lives nearby and has enjoyed Hydra since his youth, including as a retreat during his career. He’s still investing in updates to the property. The hospitality staff were terrific, the bartender was skilled, and the chef used to work at a Michelin-starred restaurant. Ask about off-menu dishes and let them surprise you. Our room didn’t face the water, and most rooms are on the ground floor, set back from it. Still, the pebbly-sandy beach, lounge chairs, and clear, cool water are only a few steps away. Several people were swimming during our late April visit, though it was a little cool. The area was uncrowded compared with other waterfronts on Hydra and the larger tourist islands, especially on weekdays. We plan to come back.

The people here really made our three-night stay. Maria, the concierge, is enthusiastic and does everything she can to make you happy. Kristos is so friendly, and his joy for life rubs off on you. Our room was spacious, with its own plunge pool, and right by the beach. It was too cool for us to get in the water. We had dinner at the resort one night and all agreed it was the best meal of our time on Hydra.

We really enjoyed staying here, especially the food. Breakfast was included and excellent, while lunch and dinner were very good too, though pricey. The beachfront setting gives you direct access to the sand, and the staff were friendly and attentive. The owner was welcoming and made the place feel personal. The nightly rate is the sticking point. At €1,100-1,200, I’d expect an extraordinary ultra-luxury stay, but what’s provided doesn’t quite match the cost. Comparable places, even in the Maldives with overwater villas and premium all-inclusive packages, offer more for the same price. For us, €600-800 would be the absolute ceiling, as it is at many hotels in beautiful destinations. Around €1,200 a night just isn’t justified. I’d call this a 3-4 star stay.

Maria was the standout. She seemed to cover everything, from concierge and front desk manager to tour guide and hostess, and deserves a 6. The hotel itself doesn’t feel like a five-star place yet. They’re making an effort, but aside from Maria there’s work to do. We arrived a few weeks before busy season, when the property was empty, and that may explain why some staff seemed not to care. This was most noticeable at the bar and restaurant. The food was good, but expensive and served in small portions. The rooms were adequate, though details like paint touch-ups in the wrong color or sheen made things feel slightly off. On arrival we learned the tap water wasn’t potable, even for brushing teeth, and toilet paper must go in the small garbage can beside the toilet rather than being flushed. Gross, though we found out this is common in Greece and not the property’s fault. Would we return? I don’t think so. It’s very expensive for what they provide. Maria was the bright spot, and without her the stay would simply have been disappointing.

I got sick while I was on the island, and the staff arranged everything I needed to get to the pharmacy, the only one open there on a Sunday. Everyone was so warm and accommodating. The beach is lovely, and the food was really fresh. My stay at Mandraki was top tier because of the amazing service. I’ll definitely return the next time I visit the island.
