Socrates Apartments & Restaurant

We stopped at this little place right on the waterfront and found it clean, pleasant, and uncluttered. Our table was at the front, with a cool breeze and a fabulous view. The server was sweet and very pleasant, and the food we ordered was fresh and really nice. We had two starters and a Greek salad, which was huge and more than enough. The server also brought complimentary local dessert and ouzo. Nobody rushed us out, like happens at some places. Well worth a visit.

I only stayed one night on a short trip, but had a great time at Socrates. The room was a good price, large, clean, nicely decorated, and even had a kitchen, though I didn’t use it. It’s next to the beach and close to a supermarket. I had dinner at the restaurant, and although I don’t eat meat or fish, I found vegetarian options I truly enjoyed. The food was delicious, and I had the best possible sunset view. Giorgos and his family, who own the place, are lovely, very friendly, and cheerful. I’ve visited plenty of rooms in Crete, and I think Socrates is a gem. I highly recommend it.

We visited in July 2025, and the village had a charming quiet feel. The tavern had a relaxed blue-and-white coastal style, with waves lapping just a few feet away. We came during high tide, and the sea nearly reached the patio. The simple traditional décor included Greek blue chairs and wood-beam ceilings, and the view alone was worth staying for. We ordered spicy cheese spread (tirokafteri), tzatziki spread, two Greek salads loaded with thick feta and fresh tomatoes, sparkling water, and Fanta style lemonade. It came to €43, which seemed fair for a seafront taverna with generous portions. Service was friendly and relaxed, with no rush. They brought us complimentary raki and semolina cake (revani) with Greek coffee, a classic local gesture. Parking was easy. For fewer crowds and lovely afternoon light over the sea, come in the late lunch hours.

Ask what fish came in that day. The meal was delicious, with fresh fish from the sea and nothing farmed. We had a gorgeous view while eating, and the staff made us feel welcome right away. They were lovely and funny.
