YANNIS H.
The church is a beautiful, well-preserved Byzantine building from the 13th century, with a pair of striking mosaic icons. It was built in 1283 by Ioannis Angelos Komninos Doukas, a few hundred meters west of Pyli, across the bridge over the Portaikos river. If you find the gate locked, look nearby for the priest. He’s very kind and polite and will open it for you. There are three other lovely sights close by: the hanging gate bridge of Pyli, 200 m east; the stone bridge Pyli Trikala, 500 m west; and the arch bridge waterfall of Paleokaria, 7 km west.
