Arriving around 9:00 PM with an infant, we found the room in a shocking state. A friend had collected the keys for us because he’d given us the stay as a gift and paid a cash deposit. Google wouldn’t let me upload the photos, but they show what I saw: dirty floors with footprints, dust and rubbish everywhere, torn window screens, and a bathroom that hadn’t been cleaned. There was grime on the toilet lid, no soap, and the kitchen sponge was rotten. The sheets downstairs were yellowish and covered in men’s hair. Hygiene seemed completely lacking. We called the manager two or three times asking for sheets, but got no answer. Changing accommodation that late with a baby was difficult, so thankfully our friend brought clean sheets from his home and we got through the night. In the morning we packed up and went to another nearby hotel owned by the same person to hand over the keys. The owner had left at 11 in the morning, and nobody had contacted us, so we didn’t want to spend another moment there. I started by raising the problem politely, thinking there might have been a mix-up or mistake. The owner’s wife came over and insisted the room couldn’t have been dirty because, she said, three people had cleaned it. I told them about the problems and said I had photos. She replied that people nowadays learn to walk on beds, make hotels dirty, leave hair, and then take pictures to ruin their reputation. In her view, I had a baby in my arms and had somehow invented this whole setup to defame her. I got very upset as she kept denying everything and even mocking me. When she finally asked what I wanted her to do, I asked for a refund, and she agreed. I never got an apology. I even asked in disbelief if she really wasn’t going to apologize for all the trouble. She said they were giving me my money back and asked what more I wanted, telling me to take it and leave. I’m sorry the whole thing upset me, and sorry I caused a disturbance, but I feel much more sorry for them. I hadn’t planned to post the photos, but I expect they’ll claim, as they do about other negative reviews and their other accommodations, that I never stayed there. I should also mention that an unrelated couple had left a negative review for one of their properties, and they thought it was us. They even called our friend and threatened lawsuits. That’s what pushed me to speak publicly. I hadn’t intended to keep going, but I ran out of patience.
