In the heart of Thessaloniki, the Arch of Galerius is easy to reach on foot and free to see, so it's a natural stop while exploring the city. Locally called Kamara, this iconic Roman monument was built between 298 and 303 AD to celebrate Emperor Galerius' victory over the Persians. It formed part of a grand complex linking the Rotunda with the imperial palace along the Via Egnatia. Of the eight original pillars, only three remain, but the detailed reliefs of Galerius' military campaigns still make an impression. The main arch is around 9.7 metres wide and 12.5 metres high, and the smaller side arches are still visible.

I'd make this a must-see in Thessaloniki. It's a nice walk through the arches, with battle scenes carved into them. The reliefs on the inner faces are better preserved; the outer ones are nearly gone, and in one scene you can only see the raised outline of a figure. I'm not sure where the 5 euro charge comes in, since this is open to the public within 500 feet of the Rotunda, with nothing to enter or climb.

This area of Thessaloniki is the most impressive, with so many ancient ruins and buildings. Don't miss the chance to see them. The masterpiece-like details are fascinating to look at.

A few shortcomings stand out: there's very little signage to explain the site, and the post-war buildings around it don't do much for the view. But in the evening, when Kamara is softly lit and people gather around it, its charm comes through. It's not perfect, just quietly alive. The Arch of Galerius, or Kamara as locals call it, isn't only a monument to look at. It works as an unofficial meeting place, especially for students, giving the area a lively, creative feel. The Rotunda is just steps away, as are cafés and street food, so it doesn't feel like a purely historical spot. Its reliefs are worn by time, but still vivid, with scenes of Emperor Galerius' victories over the Persians full of motion and purpose. It's striking how well they've held up through centuries of sun, wind, and neglect. Set amid the busy city, the arch feels both monumental and part of everyday life. Most people treat it as a must-see, but with the easy appreciation of something that still belongs to Thessaloniki.

Look around and picture how little remains. The bricks, stones, carvings, and column drums that are gone were stolen for other buildings, perhaps in nearby basements, or cleared away for roads and apartment blocks. What's left is still impressive, barely holding on: thin bricks and mortar from Greek engineers, white marble carvings by Turk artisans, and white bases and cylinders from Roman builders.
