The mountain air and view were so calming, and the food was amazing. We came as a group, and everyone had a perfect stay. The owners were warm and genuine, and Martha was an angel. When my throat felt tired, she made me a special tea with herbs she’d gathered in the mountains. The rooms were spotless, which means a lot coming from someone very particular about hygiene. I’m glad we stayed here instead of in the center of Sparta. I’d love to find another chance to come back.

Varvitsa was quiet in early March, with no tavernas or shops open, but that made the stay feel peaceful. If you like walking or cycling, there are plenty of well signposted trails. Vamvakou and Karyes are only a few minutes away by car, with places to eat and drink and interesting things to see. The rooms were clean and modern. As far as I could tell, they all have west facing balconies overlooking an impressive mountain landscape, a lovely spot for sunset. Breakfast was included, with plenty of tasty local and homemade food. There’s also an open log fire in the bar and eating area, where you can have a drink in the evening and chat with the owners or other guests. We came for a long weekend and were very happy with our choice. The owners are a friendly, pleasant couple who make sure you have what you need and offer advice on local places to visit. I’d happily stay here again if I’m in the area.
