It's a lovely hotel with lovely people, but the mechanical bird above my room across from the pool screeches during the day to keep other birds from messing or roosting on the property. It really takes away from the peaceful feel. I mentioned it to management at check-in, and they turned it off a bit early that day, but it was back on the next day. I expected a quiet retreat for my last days in Antigua and don't want to spend the day here. Thankfully the screeching stops at dark, so nights are quiet. Sorry, I can't recommend staying here.
I was excited about this beautiful property and had even considered it as the main hotel for my wedding. But the service fell short, and I don't think I'd choose it next time. The Master Suite was gorgeous and spacious, but I booked it mainly for the in-suite courtyard jacuzzi, which didn't work properly. The faucet leaked badly, the tub filled very slowly, and the patio flooded. The fixture looked in disrepair, and when I shut it off, the handle came off. I put it back on myself. Maintenance said a replacement part wasn't in stock. The Operations Manager offered a move to a smaller room with a working jacuzzi, a larger suite without one, or a temporary fix. We chose the fix and asked them to fill the tub before I returned that evening. They agreed but didn't do it. The next morning, the Operations Manager was dismissive and said it wasn't filled because I came back “too late,” even though I'd authorized entry and arrived only about 30 minutes after my estimated time. There was no apology or other accommodation. The jacuzzi, the main feature we paid for, went unused. Breakfast was included in our rate. The food was fine, but there were extra charges for small changes, like taking coffee to go, switching regular coffee to decaf, ordering orange juice, or choosing tea instead of coffee. That felt like nickel-and-diming for an included amenity at this kind of hotel. For a luxury property, I expected working amenities and more attentive, gracious service. I usually stay at the Pensativo Hotel or Los Pasos, where service consistently goes above and beyond, and will probably return to those choices. Also, there was fresh paint in parts of the property without clear signs. I leaned against a wall and ruined one of my jackets. Nobody had warned us or marked the wet paint.
I booked a year ahead and was looking forward to this stay, but was put in an attic room with no window. They said nothing else was available, then showed me a smaller room with a window. I accepted despite the fare difference, but they charged me extra for the last-minute change, even though it was their mistake. I'd requested a deluxe king, and neither room was one. Their incompetence ruined what should have been an amazing four-day weekend. The hotel is noisy too, you can hear everything from other rooms, including the newborn next to mine. Stay at Casa Santo Domingo, better value for your money.
The hotel is beautiful, the staff were kind and friendly, and the location is excellent for exploring the area. Still, room readiness and noise made for a mixed stay. At check-in, our reserved room was overbooked, so we got a lesser room. The wine opener was bent; we called for another and were told it would be brought up, but after waiting about 20 minutes we went to get it ourselves. The in-room hot tub wasn't filled or heated when we arrived. It eventually warmed up, but took quite a while. Call ahead if you plan to use it, so they can fill and heat it before you get there. Noise was the biggest downside. Sound insulation is poor: conversations and rolling luggage carry through the hallways, and from a lower-level room you can clearly hear movement and noise from the room above. With more attention to room readiness and soundproofing, this could be a great place to stay.
The building is beautiful and the staff were polite, but my two-night stay in early Feb 2026 was seriously affected by a skin rash that began during or after the visit and needed medical attention. A doctor later suggested dust mites as a likely trigger. After checking out, I contacted the hotel to give them a fair chance to look into it. They replied that dust mites are a “common environmental allergen” and said they couldn't link it to the room because I hadn't reported it during my stay. They offered no concrete resolution. For a higher-end hotel at this price, both the stay and the follow-up were disappointing. I'm sharing this so future guests can make an informed decision.
