Haus Marija

Our three-night stay was really unpleasant. The apartment smelled musty when we arrived, and a woman living below it smoked, so cigarette smells drifted inside. The owner said the beach was 100 m away, but it was actually 500 m. There were ants on the floor, in the carpets, and on the kitchen counter. Even after using ant spray, we found them in the bed when we got back from the beach, though we hadn't eaten there. The rugs were greasy, dusty, stained, and so dirty that we put them on the covered terrace. The floor was dirty too, and the kitchen floor was greasy enough to leave our feet black. The decorative pillows had stains, and the bedding had marks that looked unwashed, with some tears and holes. Each mattress had a fluffy, filthy blanket under the sheet. In the smaller room, we found a dirty sock and a plastic juice bottle under the mattress, plus dust, another plastic bottle, and dirt under the bed. We didn't check under the other beds because they had no legs. The whole place felt old, dusty, and neglected, with unattractive decorations, polystyrene pictures, paper butterflies, artificial vases hanging from the ceiling, and other ruined items. The vacuum had a full bag, and although there were spare bags, it still smelled when switched on. We couldn't tell what the owner uses for cleaning, but the supplies there looked old and unused for a long time. There was just one electrical outlet in the kitchen. The kettle was rusty. Two air conditioners were provided, but one made an annoying noise outside that would keep you awake, so we wouldn't recommend using it. There was a washing machine and dishwasher, but we didn't try them and don't know whether they worked. The apartment was advertised as offering accommodation by Privathause Marija. We hadn't expected to find a place run this way after all these years of tourism in Croatia. A detailed video would be needed to show the overall condition, since photos taken from a distance give a distorted impression. We were only there for three nights, but it made the visit very uncomfortable. We couldn't have lasted for a longer stay. The only likely option would have been to ask the owner for a refund and find somewhere else, or spend the holiday buying ant traps, cleaning supplies, a vacuum cleaner, and a mop, then cleaning all day.
