Guesthouse Ivona

It’s a little far from the old town, but the bus station is very close.

We had a lovely walk to the historic center, about 35 minutes away. The property is in a quieter commercial area rather than the center itself. Ana was attentive throughout our stay and even arranged our airport transfer.

The room was reasonably clean, apart from the fridge, and we appreciated having beach towels. The Wi-Fi was very good. Ivona was pleasant when she welcomed us, but her husband repeatedly made us feel like a nuisance and unwelcome. For €60, the accommodation felt overpriced: a tiny square room, shared bathroom, and no terrace. The other guests used the shower for an hour and 15 minutes that evening, leaving us unable to get water or use anything else. I asked Ivona's husband to fill a kettle, but he didn't speak English and clearly thought I was bothering him, telling me to do it in our bathroom. After sighing and grumbling for two minutes, he put about a glass of water in it. We had also agreed with Ivona when we arrived that we'd need to reach the airport around 12:30 PM, so leaving between 11:00 AM and noon would work better, despite the usual 10:00 AM checkout. She said that was fine and told us we could leave the keys in the door. At 10:30 the next morning, her husband knocked and told us in Croatian that checkout was at 10:00 and that it was outrageous we were still there. I tried to explain our conversation with Ivona, but he went downstairs without hearing us out. I messaged her so she could explain things to him over the phone in Croatian. We rushed out at 11:00, and instead of apologizing, he showed us a photo and insisted checkout was 10:00 at the latest and we were in the wrong. We spent 12 days in Croatia and stayed in seven places. This was the last and most expensive, yet it had the smallest room. It was also the only one without a kitchen or private bathroom. The location doesn't make up for the cost; its only advantage is being near the airport shuttle. I knew before booking that we had just one room, but that doesn't excuse being shouted at for asking for water or being chased out for no good reason. If her husband hadn't treated us like intruders several times, I wouldn't have rated the stay so harshly. There were other issues too: our room didn't match the photos, the cups were dirty, the walls did little to block noise or temperature, and the bedroom door wouldn't close properly. Why offer bed and breakfast if you so clearly dislike tourists?

I booked at the last minute on a busy Saturday and got it wrong. The place looks okay at first, and it seems set up to meet Booking's requirements, but in practice it wasn't usable and the hygiene was poor. The hosts came across as angry old men who mainly cared about getting paid. They wanted 15 euros to park in front of their garages, and with checkout at 10, they were knocking at our door by 9:30. I don't recommend it.
