Hotel Kvarner - Liburnia

A large terrace over the sea made a marvelous spot for the generous complimentary buffet breakfast, and the sea-facing rooms were outstanding. The hotel is historic and old, but renovated with all the latest amenities. Staff were efficient and friendly, and the location is perfect. We enjoyed our stay and visit to Opatija. Stay here!

The location is superb, and the rooms and terrace were clean, with a nice view. Staff were very friendly and professional. There were still quite a few missing details, though. The fitness and spa offering wasn't really what the adverts and photos led me to expect, and breakfast could be improved. That great location also comes with some noise.

This was my second stay at Kvarner Hotel, and I was excited to come back to Opatija with my puppy this time. I had checked in advance on booking.com and asked the hotel, since it was advertised as pet-friendly. I was glad the restaurant staff brought some joy to our stay, and I want to thank them for being so kind. The pet fee was a shock. It wasn't shown anywhere, and I only learned about it at check-in: 80 euros per night, or 480 euros for our stay. I've paid 120 euros for a whole week at better-known, larger hotels before. I understand that pets mean extra cleaning, but the cost should have been disclosed. They also hadn't told me the pet policy ahead of time. Pets can basically only stay in your room. I understand not allowing them indoors at breakfast or dinner so they don't disturb other guests, but this felt excessive. My family of three never ate a meal together because we didn't want to leave our puppy alone. The hotel usually has a big outdoor terrace, but pets aren't allowed there either. The terrace was also being renovated. I only got an email about that two days before the stay, when cancelling or changing the trip wasn't really an option. I visited in April and expected fewer food choices because the hotel might be quieter, but the meals were still very disappointing. Breakfast wasn't a buffet on four of our six mornings. I could have accepted that if they'd let me know, but the property's page says “buffet breakfast,” and it was only served twice. Dinner was included in my booking, but the menu had just five dishes. We ended up eating at restaurants in town instead. Parking was another 35 euros a day, but that was listed when I booked, so I had no issue with the charge.

We loved this hotel. The location is perfect, the rooms are really nice, and the service is outstanding. There was a good choice of delicious food at the restaurant. The steak tartar is made at the table, which is unique here in Opatija. Looking forward to coming back soon!
