Villa Mario

We had dinner on a small pier with a lovely sunset view, and the fish dishes we ate were good. The choices did seem a bit expensive, though. There was also a mix-up: we ordered two squid dishes but were served two mixed fish plates, which cost considerably more. The waiter hadn't written anything down, so he may have passed the wrong order to the kitchen. We didn't want the food wasted and accepted the plates. Once he realized the mistake, he discounted one dish by 50%, but we still paid full price for the other.

The view was scenic and the atmosphere was nice, but the food was awful for the price and the wait. Our caprese salad had mozzarella that tasted three days old, like it came from a local supermarket. The fish plate that followed was gross and nearly tasteless. All the pasta looked and tasted like toddlers had made it, and the carbonara was especially bad.

The salad came already dressed with far too much vinegar, and the squid hadn't been cleaned. The waiter said, "that's how it comes from the sea," but I've eaten squid before and never had it with roe and mess inside. A very, very bad experience. I do NOT recommend it.

The food is amazing this year, so I guess they've changed the chef. I had fresh squid, the most delicious thing I've eaten all year! Ante the waiter is a legend. Go Hadjuk Split!
