Hostel Antique

Maybe the best hostel in Istra. The rooms are clean and roomy, with good mattresses, personal lights, and curtains. The kitchen and bathrooms are spacious too, and I think all the rooms have a decent-sized window. Go up one flight of stairs and there’s a sandwich shop on the street with a positive Gault & Millau rating. The bus station is a 15-minute walk away, and the old town center is nearby, though there isn’t much there beyond the Roman arena.

The beds were comfortable, the hostel was clean, and it’s very affordable. The location is especially handy for Monteparadiso fest and other concerts at Karlo Rojc, just a 10-minute walk away. It’s also right by the ancient Roman arch and other major historical sights. Staff were friendly and helpful, and the bedrooms have AC. Free lockers sit beside the beds. The kitchen is well equipped with a stove, kettle, microwave, and toaster. Hairdryers are available to borrow for free at reception, so no need to bring one. There’s a laundry service for a few euros, though I can’t remember the price since I didn’t use it. Bike rental is available, and there’s a rack at the entrance to store your bike. I’ll probably be back at this hostel when I return to Pula for Monteparadiso next year. Highly recommend!

The common areas were kept very clean, and I liked the kitchen. The hostel is quite large and looks like a hotel, but people were careful not to disturb their neighbours. I had an issue with another guest in my room, and reception sorted it out quickly. Nice hostel.

What made me feel unsafe was the lack of locks throughout the place. There were no locks on the dorm rooms, and the bathrooms had no proper doors either, just a thin curtain at the showers. While I was showering, someone left the bathroom door open and I could hear a group of guys in the corridor. I was uncomfortable knowing anyone could walk in at any time. For a hostel with so many guests, this really needs to be addressed. Locks on dorms and proper lockable shower doors are a basic safety necessity.
