HI Hostel Rijeka

The front desk person first said we could exchange money before paying, then insisted that we pay by card. They should make up their mind. Also, when we tried to head out for dinner, the door handle fell off 🙄. The room was just average and definitely wasn't worth the roughly $100 we paid.

Bedbugs were everywhere in this hostel. My boyfriend was bitten all over and had to spend the whole night in the living room. We washed our clothes and belongings twice, but there are still things we can't wash and don't know what to do with. It was incredibly stressful and completely ruined our trip. The hostel staff didn't take responsibility or offer us a refund. I strongly recommend avoiding this place unless you want this nightmare on your holiday.

The hostel is in a villa surrounded by a park, and the staff were attentive, kind, and easy to talk to. They even look after two street cats, including an orange one that likes people. The reception has information about Rijeka, and photos of the town are displayed throughout. I had the smallest room, with one bunk bed. It was spotless, like the rest of the hostel. The rooms come in different shapes, but they're all spacious, and some have sea or park views. Larger rooms have more bunk beds and their own bathroom. It was quiet even with a large group of children around. Breakfast is self-serve in a fancy room downstairs. The nearest beaches are only a few minutes away on foot, and some are really nice. The town centre is about a kilometre away and easy to walk to. Trsat castle takes more effort, with lots of steps or a winding road, but you can also take a public bus or rent a scooter on the street. A nice, comfortable, safe stay.

The terrace is a real highlight, and the historic building is fabulous, with spacious, very clean rooms that are well priced. Though it's near the city centre and industrial harbour, the sound isolation is excellent. I'd recommend this hostel to anyone visiting Rijeka.
