Hotel Neboder

A great spot close to downtown and several universities. The rooms were comfortable and clean, with beautiful views, and the staff were exceptionally helpful. Breakfast was excellent and had a rich selection of different dishes. I absolutely recommend it and will always stay here when I come to Rijeka.

The location and view were good, but the room was a mess. The carpet was beyond disgusting, and the floor was very dirty. There was a brown spot on the towel too. It was loud at night because the balcony door wouldn't shut fully. The tiny, scary elevator didn't seem to have any certification or check-up, so I took the stairs to the 10th floor.

From the 7th-floor balcony I could watch the panorama of Rijeka. The beds were comfortable, and both the Wi-Fi and A/C worked well. I found a fairly large food selection at the self-service canteen on the 3rd floor. The two elevators are dated but still work. Neboder Hotel is quite close to the city center, and the prices are just okay.

The website photos must have been taken by a REALLY good photographer. We came to Rijeka for a concert at Pogon Kulture and picked this hotel because it was only 50m away. Looking back, that wasn't our brightest idea, and we should have read reviews before booking. ;) As soon as we came in, there was a faint smell of old, damp wood near reception. It had been raining, so I figured I might be imagining it and let it go. There were also six clocks above reception showing different time zones, and none of them worked, apart from a second hand ticking very slightly in one spot. The key came on a keychain as big and heavy as a GMO-modified carrot. Then we took an industrial-looking elevator, the sort you'd expect in an underground factory warehouse, not modern industrial design. The whole place felt like ex-Yugoslavia in 1984, with no money spent on upkeep since. Our door on the fifth floor was wonky. We had to push it to turn the key and unlock it, and it kept out no more sound than a curtain, much like the windows. One light didn't work, the TV screen was barely bigger than a laptop display, and the room was freezing when we arrived. At least it was so small that the AC warmed it up quickly once it started heating, after blowing cold air for about 10 minutes. The bathroom was really a narrow hallway made by putting a wall along the room, leaving only 5cm of space where it met the windows. With old-school glossy white tiles everywhere but the ceiling, it felt like an abattoir. The room was advertised as antiallergic, but my nose and throat started itching when I put my head on the pillow. Maybe it was a coincidence, though I doubt it. ;) We didn't even get to breakfast. The pair we travelled with messaged us to pack up and find food somewhere else. They had gone down and found nearly cold eggs, awful coffee, and literally two kinds of salami. One of them was obviously bad, but was still being served. The relatively clean abattoir bathroom is about the only positive I can think of. There was also a garage, though you can't reserve a spot and just have to hope one is free, and being close to the concert venue was the only reason we considered the hotel at all. With all those premium comodities, it was waaaaay overpriced at 112,50€. Honestly, you'd probably be better off reclining your car seat and getting some sleep there.
