Hotel Balatura

The evening meal was a real surprise. I only found out after sitting down that I’d booked a vegetarian hotel, but within twenty minutes I was eating some of the best food I’ve ever tried, and I’d stopped worrying about the lack of meat. After more than three weeks on the road, this was the nicest place I stayed. I got a warm welcome after a long motorcycle ride, and the air conditioning in my room was especially welcome. The surroundings are peaceful and beautiful. Gordan was great to talk with on my last morning, and I’ll definitely come back.

The food was a lovely surprise. We hadn’t realized Hotel Balatura was vegetarian, but everything we ate was top notch. Breakfast, included in the room price, had all sorts of food, and dinner was always something to look forward to. After a busy few days on Cres, we were glad to spend several relaxing days here. Our room was spotless, with crisp white linen and towels, and the balcony overlooking the pool felt like paradise. The managers, cleaners, and waiters all made us feel welcome. I hope we can return one day.

We only had a few minutes with Gordan when we left in the morning, but he has real charisma. We arrived late and left early after just one night, yet I wanted to write about the food. It was an experience, and I was definitely impressed. I could happily eat that way three or four days a week.

Getting there really calls for a car, but the trip is worth it. The pool has a lovely, distinctive design, and everyone was helpful throughout our stay, with great tips on places to see and things to do nearby. The food was amazing, and the service felt like what you’d expect at a Michelin-star restaurant. The owners were exceptionally friendly, and both the building and rooms have been beautifully restored. I hope to come back sometime.
