Crowded. The staff were incredibly nice and helpful, and our room in the newest section, rooms 7xxx, was spacious and modern. Some design choices were odd, though, like having no hooks for towels or bathrobes in a spa hotel. The walk from that part of the hotel to the facilities is long, and doing it 6 times a day gets tiring. The main problems showed up at Saturday dinner. The hotel has one large dining room that seats about 600, and around 500 guests were assigned dinner in the same 1.5h slot. The buffet stations were swamped. There was a queue for soup, 5-10 min for the main course, and lines for soft drinks and ice cream. It was loud, and the food, despite a wide selection, mostly tasted the same. I’d put the quality at 3-star hotel level at most. A restaurant serving about 200 guests at a time would be more fitting for a 4-star hotel. Going through that crowded, noisy meal setup 3 times a day for 5 days was the opposite of a relaxing wellness holiday. The thermal baths are the main reason to stay, but they were packed too. Even with chairs lined up next to each other, getting 3 or 4 together for a family was impossible. The pool was crowded, with few typical thermal spa features such as hot tubs or water massages, and no facilities for kids older than 3 years. The saunas were crowded as well, a little outdated, and had a strange selection. They’re open, bright, and loud, with very little privacy, so it was hard to find a relaxing moment. There isn’t much for kids to do, and family activities like picado and pool cost extra. People come for spa and thermal baths holidays hoping to relax, enjoy themselves, take care of body and soul, and head home with energy. We didn’t get any of that.

This is a large, busy family hotel and spa, so expect plenty going on. We had a very good room in the new block 7***, though, as others have said, it could use more bathroom hooks. Dinner on the first night was dreadful. It wasn’t clear what had gone wrong, but the hotel had conference guests and seemed to prioritize them over the other guests. We complained. I’m still giving it a high rating because manager Martina Borovcak and her team responded by booking us dinner the following night at Dvorac Mihanovic, where we had a great time. The rest of the stay went as expected, and we were perfectly satisfied with breakfast and dinner on the next couple of nights.

The food was abundant and varied, and was probably among the best spa resort dining I’ve had. The pools and hydrotherapy options were excellent too, whether you wanted to relax or get something more therapeutic. They were well maintained and clearly central to what Terme Tuhelj does well. The staff were another highlight, warm and attentive from arrival, and consistently willing to go the extra mile. The surroundings in Croatian Zagorje are lovely, calm and green. The rooms were comfortable enough, but felt dated and are due for a full refresh. Water systems in the building made some startling noises at night, and the automatic lights were over-sensitive. Light sleepers should bring earplugs. The gym disappointed me: ventilation made sustained cardio genuinely difficult, and some equipment needs repair or replacement. If fitness is a priority, keep expectations modest. Terme Tuhelj is a good resort that could be great with targeted investment. I’d come for the pools, food, and staff, while being prepared for the room issues.

The facilities are designed very well, but they aren’t properly maintained. I also got the sense they’re short on experienced staff. The saunas were great, and the pool was nice. My top recommendation is the exclusive jacuzzi for hotel guests. The price-to-quality ratio is good, and I’d still recommend a visit.

We stayed at the end of October 2025, and everyone was lovely from check-in through checkout. Thanks to Kanvagil (from Punjab, India) for making the best omelets at breakfast. I rarely praise them, but they were soo good :) The only complaint is a humming noise in the room the whole time. We were tired, so we fell asleep anyway. Room no 4109. The hotel is perfect for small kids, with animation, food, pools, slides, and more. Prices are lower than in Slovenia. We’ll be back.
