Apartman Tamara

The apartment itself is very nice, including the rooftop terrace. But our stay turned into a really upsetting experience, unlike anything we’ve run into over 20 years of frequent travel. We arrived from Slovenia after a long day and found the key left for us, since Tamara was busy and away. That let us check in, shower, and get ready to watch the sunset at the nearby beach. When Tamara came home, she collected our passports and we had some pleasant small talk. Since nobody had explained how payment worked, I asked whether we could pay by credit card or if she wanted cash. She chose cash. We didn’t have the full amount with us because we hadn’t been told it had to be cash, so I offered to pay for the first two nights with what we had, then get the rest from an ATM the next morning. Tamara agreed, and we headed to the beach. About an hour later, she messaged us saying we had to go to an ATM right away and pay the full amount. We were confused, so we returned to ask what had changed. Tamara said she’d changed her mind and insisted again that we go into town immediately for the money. She became rude and aggressive, and said we’d have to leave right away if we didn’t. We no longer felt comfortable staying for the five days we’d planned, so we packed up to leave. Things got worse. She seemed not to expect us to refuse her demands, and appeared to realize she wouldn’t make the money she expected for the week. She got ruder and tried to take the key to our apartment. We went inside to get our things, while she and her husband watched us pack as if we were criminals. Her husband seemed uncomfortable with the situation too, but eventually became quite impolite. Tamara called us “thieves” and kept monitoring us. I don’t know what went wrong, but they even left their baby crying in their apartment for more than 10 minutes. The whole thing felt insane. When I asked for the money I’d already paid back, she refused, saying she’d never received anything and that we could call the police if we wanted. It was already about 9:30 pm, we were very shaken, and we needed to find another place to stay, so we accepted that our money was gone. By chance, we found a comfortable apartment nearby with super friendly, welcoming hosts, the complete opposite of our experience at Tamara’s place. In hindsight, leaving was still the right decision. We weren’t willing to accept a host being rude, changing their mind suddenly, and treating us like criminals. Tamara, we still wish you and your family all the best.
