We had a wonderful stay in the heart of Varaždin. It was easy to explore the baroque center on foot from this perfect location. Our room was clean and very comfortable, and the staff were incredibly friendly. Highly recommended if you're visiting this beautiful city!

The cafe on the first floor has an oriel corner window ("erker") looking out over a busy pedestrian intersection. It has to be the best spot in town for breakfast or a nightcap. Even with temperatures reaching 35C during our five nights, the room never got too hot, and we didn't turn on the fully working airco once. We were so happy with our stay at Hotel Istra that anything below five stars would feel misleading, even though not every fixture is properly fixed. It's a wonderfully cosy place right in the heart of Varaždin, close enough to everything that the whole town feels like an extension of your living room. The rooms were much more spacious than we expected, and the little minibar fridge worked perfectly for fresh fruit from the nearby farmers market, the "plac". Staff were smiling and ready to help at every turn.

We went there, but couldn't find a hotel. All we saw was a bank and a shoe and dress shop, and there was no hotel sign. We kept searching for the entrance and couldn't find it.

The staff were polite, but the bedsheets were smaller than the mattress and the shower was very uncomfortable. There was also a strong smell in the corridor coming from the restaurant in the basement.

I've stayed here for years and think it's the best hotel in Varazdin. The people working here are very kind, and breakfast is good.
