Hotel Varazdin

I was in town for the Trash Film Festival and stayed here for a couple of days. The staff made me feel very well looked after. They were friendly, spoke English well, and checked me in politely even though I arrived after 3 a.m. When I had to leave in the middle of the night for a 3 a.m. train, they thoughtfully packed me a breakfast to take along. The people running this hotel should be proud of their team. The hotel is just a stone’s throw from the railway station, and there’s a small market shop across the street. The old town center is about a 15-minute stroll, or around 10 minutes if you walk faster. If you sleep in, the cafe and restaurant on the terrace are handy for coffee and a snack before exploring. Breakfast runs from 7 to 9 a.m. It’s a simple buffet with meats, cheeses, cooked sausage and bacon, scrambled eggs, plus tea, coffee, juice, and yogurt. My room had air conditioning, windows that opened, a TV, very good Wi-Fi, a refrigerated minibar, and a shower with great water pressure. The bed was very comfortable.

We didn’t hear the trains at all, even though they passed regularly, and the rooms being a bit basic and old didn’t bother us. The hotel is right by the station for anyone adventurous enough to travel by train, and the town center is an easy walk away. The restaurant is lovely and the staff were welcoming and friendly throughout. We checked out at around 3 a.m., and they kindly gave us a breakfast pack for the journey. That was amazing.

The room smelled unpleasant, with sewer fumes coming from the bathroom, and felt a bit dated. The hotel is beside a busy road and bus terminal. Around 11 p.m. the front door gets locked, and there’s no way to get in or out unless you find someone or call them.
