Hostel Bureau

The building was pretty hard to spot, but the location is fantastic for the price, right in the centre. I stayed off season and had the room to myself for a couple of nights. It was spotless, I had no problems, and the staff were helpful. Since I was there for a conference, I met plenty of people there, but the hostel itself was socially quiet. If you're traveling solo at the start of the year, you probably won't meet many people there. That's just how it is in the off season, and it wasn't a major problem for me.

I had a fabulous stay. The four-bed dorm was all mine, and the toilets and showers were really clean. I didn't use the kitchen, though it looked clean too. They let me leave my luggage for free and helped me get the heating sorted. If you're visiting Zagreb on a budget, this is a good place to stay.

We only needed a place for one night, but it turned out great. We arrived late after our previous hostel wouldn't let us check in, and were searching in the middle of the night. I called here, and Paul (I think that was his name) came out into the snow to let us in and show us the way, since Google Maps was pointing us somewhere else and we couldn't find it. The location is central, close to everything you need, and the rooms were clean and tidy. Great prices too. Thanks for having us, we'll be back.

On my second trip to Zagreb, I stayed at Hostel Bureau again. There were a few new faces on staff, but the team was still kind, welcoming, and helpful. The rooms, showers, toilets, and facilities were all very clean, and staff gave us good Croatian food recommendations. My roommates were great. It's not a party hostel, and the layout can make it hard to meet people, though I met people in my room. Whether you connect with others depends on who you are; if you're a recluse, you'll find it hard anywhere. The hostel is in a great central spot, quiet, and easy to reach from the bus station. Upper Town, including the WW2 tunnel and museum of broken relationships, is about a 10/15 minute walk away. It also felt very safe. From Zagreb airport, you can take bus 290 into Zagreb and then tram 4, 11, or 12 right to the hostel. That costs €1, compared with €8 for the Shuttlebus. There's CCTV in the hallway, but none in the toilets or rooms. I misplaced my jacket, asked staff to check the cameras, and they found it for me. The price for what you get is excellent. I'll be back and would definitely recommend staying here.
