Palmers Apartments and Rooms

Palmers Lodge Zagreb had a warm, welcoming feel, and the staff were genuinely friendly and helpful. I found the rooms clean and comfortable, better than I expected for a hostel. The common areas had some life without getting overwhelming, good for meeting other travelers or relaxing after exploring the city. The location was great too. Excellent value, and I'd definitely stay again. 100% recommend it to anyone visiting Zagreb.

The surroundings were lovely, and so were the reception staff. But when I called ahead, a girl named Ellie answered while apparently busy on her mobile discussing a personal matter. She seemed hostile and too occupied to answer my questions about a possible stay, which felt unprofessional. I could also hear what sounded like profane music in the background during the call, though I'm not sure if it was lobby music.

The receptionist was kind and gave me recommendations. The hostel is a long walk from the city center, and though there's parking right in front, you need a card from the hostel, so you have to stop somewhere and ask for it, which isn't easy. The rooms are below the main floor, almost like a cellar, and the Urbantrain line passes the windows, so it can be noisy at night. The “included” breakfast was just a pot to boil water and filter coffee, no food or anything else.

The staff were amazing and helped me in all sorts of ways, with service on a par with a five-star hotel. The clean room had individual heating, and towels were provided at no extra cost. It's an easy walk from both the bus and train stations. The only downside was hearing trams at night, though it probably won't bother you unless you're a very light sleeper.
