Villa Mimosa

The administration’s behavior was the hardest part to deal with. I could have managed basic service issues caused by the situation, like electricity, internet, or mosquitoes, but I can’t overlook how things were handled. The owner introduced us to some leaders without asking us first, and they didn’t respect our privacy or safety. There was no privacy, and basic hostel rules weren’t respected. They were unprofessional, which could make the hostel dangerous for humanitarian workers, especially local ones. This was my worst experience in Les Cayes. The hostel was a nightmare.

The thing that most disappointed me was that the pool wasn’t filled, but I still highly recommend Villa Mimosa and can’t wait to stay again. We were there for two weeks and had a wonderful time. The king bed was very comfortable, housekeeping kept everything clean, and the living area was spacious. There was a fridge, microwave, and even a multi-gallon drinking water dispenser. The restaurant food was amazing, with fair lunch prices and generous portions. One note: Expedia’s wording made it sound like breakfast and lunch were included, but only breakfast was. Everyone on staff was friendly and checked that we were happy. In the second week, the electricity went in and out for a while because of generator issues, but staff gave excellent repair updates. Wifi worked well most of the time, and the AC worked about half the time. Mosquitoes weren’t much of a problem in our bedroom, which had window screens, though a couple of the sitting room windows didn’t. The management and security team always made us feel safe and cared for.

The room had working air conditioning, the receptionist was friendly, and the area felt safe. But the accommodations weren’t what the Airbnb listing showed. When we arrived, we were told the listing was old and no longer accurate, and asked to pay more for another room. Apart from that mix-up, it was a fairly typical Haiti hotel, safe but in need of some improvements.

There’s a large courtyard with a really nice pool. The rooms are pretty comfortable, and I’d readily recommend this place to average travelers.
