Centrum Panzio

Centrum Hostel is very close to Debrecen City Centre, which is a great location, but I didn’t feel safe there. The owner seemed friendly at first, then sent me strange messages after learning I was travelling alone. The room was in poor condition: the bathroom was full of water and the heating didn’t work. I asked several times to have the heater fixed, but nothing was done. At checkout, the owner also demanded extra money for supposed “foreign taxes,” even though I’d checked that my payment already included all taxes. I wouldn’t recommend staying here.

The price was decent, and the accommodation was fairly clean and comfortable. There are several breakfast options, and I recommend the Hungarian-style omelette. It’s close to the centre, though the top-floor hallway gets warm. The windows insulate well when closed, but opening them lets in the sound of the trams and their strong vibrations. There’s also a bar across the street, so drunk people can be noisy at night.

The room was okay, but there weren’t enough hangers and the fridge smelled bad. I’d have preferred a kettle in place of the microwave.

The bed was comfy, and breakfast was okay. My room was very clean and fairly tidy, though I’d have found the atmosphere tiring if I’d stayed longer than one night. The apartment feels like a cramped, mismatched flat from the communist era, packed with low-quality, unnecessary “must-have” accessories. The fittings and furniture seem placed at random. The staff came across as creepy at first, then turned out to be kind, though their manner was strange and reminded me of 1980s communist Hungary. I’d use this place only to spend one night before moving on. I’m not posting photos because I don’t want to add visual pollution. Blaeh.
