The food is plentiful, with a wide selection, and the full breakfast and dinner buffets were available even when occupancy was low. The main building could pass for four stars, but Hertelendy house needs updating, especially the showers. The bed linen also doesn’t feel four-star, although the bed itself was great and comfortable. All the room fridges need replacing, though every room was very clean. Well done to the room cleaning staff. Reception staff were polite and friendly. They were also the only staff who acknowledged us with eye contact and a smile. The waitresses were missing all of that, except Tiffany, who we noticed worked hardest and was polite with guests. The number of pools available to us was unacceptable. We weren’t told that there’s a yearly limit on how much water the establishment can use. With occupancy low, perhaps they were saving it for busier times. From an engineering point of view, I’d have filled the back pool overnight so it could cool down for use the next day. It wasn’t available to us all day, which made little sense. Still, it’s a must-go, and good value.

A fantastic place!

We’d stayed at the hotel twice before, but this time we booked Hertelendy house for eight days because it was cheaper. Check-in is at the hotel reception, where you also get the barrier code. Parking is free in front of the houses or in the spa parking lot. The guesthouse is a large, three-storey building with several rooms and a balcony. Inside, there are tables, chairs, a fireplace and a huge column. Our room had everything you’d expect in a hotel room, so we didn’t feel we were missing anything. The food selection was very wide, and it all looked good. We chose the place partly because we expected to use the house’s wellness area, with its jacuzzi and sauna in the morning and evening. We hadn’t been told before arriving that it wasn’t working at all. The weather was very cold, and the room walls were so thin we could hear everything from the neighboring rooms, even coughing. The Wi-Fi was also very poor. Our phones and laptops kept showing the hourglass, and one evening I couldn’t follow a web conference because the connection dropped every few minutes. The side entrance to the spa was handy, especially with the cold, wind and three rainy days. I later realized we might have been given a locker key, but nobody mentioned it at check-in. There was also a power outage from early morning until late afternoon on one day. I couldn’t use the fitness room treadmill, the sauna world stayed out of order even after power was restored, and the regular pools weren’t available either. On the second day our kettle broke, so we tried to make the herbal teas we’d brought with hot water. While unpacking, I noticed a woman pouring water behind the huge column. At the very back by the wall, there was a kitchen cabinet with glasses, a tap and a kettle. We could have boiled water there, but nobody told us about it, and you couldn’t see it from the front. We were unhappy about all this, but might have accepted it until checkout. I asked whether we could get a small discount because we hadn’t been able to use the mini wellness area at all. I didn’t even bring up the other issues. They said they don’t give discounts. I explained that when we’d booked, we’d been told there would be scheduled maintenance in the sauna world and one or two pools, and that was included in the confirmation and in the price calculation. They said we could use the wellness facilities in the main building, but the steam cabin there hadn’t worked for three days either. Walking back to the main building in slippers, in the wind and rain, at 5-6 degrees, wearing a damp robe, didn’t appeal to us. I told them this wasn’t a good policy. We’d planned to return within a few months with our family, five adults and one child, a stay worth around half a million forints even at a low estimate. They still wouldn’t offer 10-20 thousand forints for something that was supposed to be included in the price. They said the person who makes the rules wasn’t there. Congratulations to whoever makes them. Any small discount would have been enough for me to leave without a bitter taste, but that’s how it ended. If this is how much they care about guest satisfaction, there’s a problem. It’s a shame, because the spa is good, but we won’t come back after paying this much.

The setting is quiet and refined, just 30 meters from the spa, and the location and equipment are perfect. The room lost a star for me because there weren’t enough sockets and their placement wasn’t very practical. The bike rental needs work too, only 1 out of 5 bikes was usable. I especially liked the separate little wellness area with a sauna and jacuzzi. We went there every day.
