The property is elegant without feeling stiff, and its palms and modern buildings sit nicely in the tropical surroundings. I tried the signature barefoot experience at Kawah Wurung, a hidden gem I’d recommend to guests visiting the area. The staff made the stay especially memorable. From the chef to room service, everyone was kind, attentive and well prepared. Thanks to the whole team for taking such care, to Mr. Aji for the lovely chats, and especially to Miss Rachel for her calm, thoughtful approach. The sunrise from the pool is something special, maybe the best in Banyuwangi, if not all of Java. I arrived back in the city with low expectations and left smiling after a few days here. It felt relaxed and refined at once. I’d happily return. 10/10.

The outdoor spaces are what made this stay for me. The garden, pool, beach view and seating spots are all so pretty and well looked after, and the whole place has a calm feel that’s perfect for healing. I was less impressed by the room. For a 5-star hotel, it felt small and very standard, without much of a luxury feel. Still, I’m kind of obsessed with the view and ambience.

The gardens are spacious and green, and the views are magnificent, among the best I’ve seen from a hotel. But I’d only choose this place for an evening of relaxing, dinner and sunset, rather than a longer stay at its nightly price. The rooms have a nice layout, but aren’t very functional. There’s no basic refrigerator, the walls are thin enough to hear neighbors, and the bathrooms are small. The door handle is oddly heavy. The desk chair looks more like a prop than something you can work in. The bed sits very low and squeaks when you move, and the pillow felt too thick and firm to be comfortable. I ordered salmon chipotle, but it came with plain raw avocado that was bitter and hard to eat. Some security staff also just watched guests arrive with luggage instead of offering help.

The Barefoot Experience was wonderful. They put together a picnic in the mountains, and the details were so carefully arranged that I’d absolutely recommend it. We’re quite particular about food and often request changes. The restaurant followed our instructions exactly, which doesn’t happen everywhere, even at high-end places. And throughout the excursion, meals and room service, every staff member treated us with such kindness and professionalism. They were attentive the whole time. I’ll really miss being there and hope I can come back soon.
