The rice field views at Padi Bali Retreat were beautiful, stretching out to the horizon, and the big windows in our well-designed room made the scenery feel close. The garden was full of bright flowers and carefully looked after, and we loved relaxing by the lovely pool. Each morning brought fresh, delicious breakfast. The staff were warm and attentive from the minute we arrived, and all the small details were handled thoughtfully, so the stay felt effortless. With the amenities, service, and value all so good, this became our favorite place on Bali. We had a wonderful time and would happily return or recommend Padi Bali Retreat for a quiet getaway.

The villa itself is lovely, and I can’t deny the owner has a beautiful concept. But the gaps all around the roof are large enough for animals to get inside, and that became a dealbreaker for me. On my first night, I woke at 5 a.m. to find a tokay gecko on the roof, about the length and twice the width of my forearm. As someone from London, I panicked, and reception wasn’t there to help remove it. I know Ubud means insects, wasps, nearby frogs, and wildlife sounds at night. Large lizards inside are more than I can handle, especially since tokay geckos are known to bite and can be aggressive. I chose not to stay the rest of my booking. The owner should think about sealing those roof gaps, as they could put many guests off. I’m still waiting for a refund for the two nights I couldn’t use.

The food was good, the views were lovely, and the staff were so friendly, always checking if we needed anything. We really enjoyed our stay. The missing AC caught me by surprise, but it wasn’t a problem for us. The shower is why I’m giving four stars. The water kept pulsing on and off. When it got hot, it was hot enough to scald, then stopped after around 30 seconds and usually didn’t return. Twice the water cut out completely, leaving me standing there with soap on for 5-6 minutes. I started leaving the shower running into the tub so I’d have water to rinse with if it stopped again. In an “eco” villa, it helps to know what to expect.

We couldn’t handle the geckos, so for us this was only worth booking for one night. The staff were kind and did their best to help us feel comfortable. We asked for a refund for the three nights we couldn’t stay, and they processed it the same day. The owner and staff were understanding and never made us feel bothered.

We had a comfortable, clean villa and the customer service was great, but the quiet stay we booked for didn’t happen. A pool bar restaurant next door played loud music every day from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. During the first couple of days especially, it spoiled things. Some days it was so loud it seemed to be coming from the next room. The villa itself has a serene atmosphere, and the staff were wonderful, but the music made it hard to enjoy that peace during our five nights.
