The view was superb, and I chose this hotel specifically to watch the sunrise from its balcony and hangout spot. It's right by the entrance to Fort De Kock, which was very convenient. The room was very spacious, and breakfast was included, though it was nothing special: regular fried rice and fried noodles, with a similar menu on both days of my stay. The staff were superb. They were so kind and welcoming, especially Ovi at reception, along with the male receptionists. They made it feel like family and made me want to return. The room itself was very old, though, and some things felt like they could crumble at any time. The bathroom flush tank leaked, and the shower pressure was extremely slow. The old window wouldn't close, so I didn't feel the room was secure. The fixtures and facilities need replacing, especially in the bathroom. With those repairs, I'd be happy to recommend the place. If management keeps things as they are, I'd probably try other places first.

We were shown a room on the second floor but got one on the third. They told us it was the same, though it really wasn't. Luckily, the third-floor view was better. Around the city you can hear calls to prayer, often from more than one place at once. There's a nice chocolate cake bakery nearby, and in the evening there are roadside stalls just down the hill. Breakfast was simple and forgettable. It's good value if you can negotiate the rates.

It's close to town, with the centre just a short walk away. The room is fairly large, but there was a bad smell in both the room and the toilet, and it needs a thorough clean. All the staff were friendly and helpful.

The hotel is quite old, but the view is good. If you're Muslim, you can hear the adhan and Islamic talks from several nearby mosques. The best part is how close Benteng Hotel is to Bukittinggi Zoo.
