Hotel Mutiara Kota Tua

The room and bed were fine for the price, though a bit sticky. The cockroaches are why I’ll never come back. I found one in the bathroom on the first day; that can happen, and staff helped remove it. Before bed the second evening, I spotted another in the curtain, and they took that one away too. Then a third crawled up the curtain this morning, so I left immediately. There were also lots of tiny cockroaches in the bathroom.

It was around 1:00 AM when my wife and I arrived, and the condition was so poor that we booked another hotel straight away. The place is very cheap, and the staff are friendly, but it’s extremely old and unclean. There were lots of scooters inside, people smoking casually indoors, and we found bugs in the bed. The rooms smelled bad and were falling apart. When I tried to close the door, it broke apart. It looks much older than the photos suggest. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone used to Scandinavian or European standards, and I can’t understand all the good reviews.

For around 10eur ish, it’s good enough. The AC was cold, and despite being beside the main road, I didn’t hear traffic. The bed sheets were clean enough and had no smell. There was moldy paint everywhere, though, and someone was working on an aircon downstairs. Bugs share the bathroom with you, and the drinking glasses were dirty with old stains. The broken door mentioned by a previous reviewer is still there and still broken.

I ended up leaving in the middle of the night, around 00-01 AM, and had to find another hotel. The room was awful: the blanket was dusty, the pillow smelled strange, and the service was very bad. The door wouldn’t lock from outside. When I complained to reception, they handled it unprofessionally and didn’t offer to move me. The strange part was that the security guard, not the receptionist, made the decision about whether I could change rooms. Why couldn’t they just move me to a room with a working key? Worst experience ever. HIGHLY NOT RECOMMENDED!
