The location may be good, but I’d rather travel farther if cleanliness comes first. I booked a longer stay after reading the Agoda reviews, but Shalva Hotel Jakarta was nowhere near the condition those reviews led me to expect. I arrived after dinner and stayed that first night because it was too late to find somewhere else. The next day I checked out, even though I’d planned to stay longer. The room had dirty, heavily stained walls and floors, not just ordinary wear. It felt neglected and unpleasant. It was dark, had a musty smell, and the towels smelled so bad they were hard to use. Some light switches were missing their covers, leaving the fittings exposed. The door had no inside safety lock, though marks and a frame suggested one had been there before and the mechanism had been removed. There was no refrigerator either. I was told those are only in “VVIP” rooms. In a hot country like Indonesia, I expected a small fridge as a fairly standard room feature. Overall the maintenance, cleanliness, comfort, and basic amenities were a major disappointment, and the actual hotel fell far below the impression its online reviews gave. I wouldn’t recommend it to travelers who care about those things.

The staff made the biggest impression. When I lost a bracelet that wasn’t valuable but meant a lot to me as a family heirloom, reception and housekeeping helped search right away and kept me updated. I eventually found it myself, but I’m very grateful for their warm, professional support. Service was 5/5. The room was spacious and centrally located, with a reasonable price. The AC was already on when I arrived, which was a nice touch. Breakfast was quite good, though the linens seemed a little old and there was no foot mat.

The staff were friendly, and when we’d forgotten our travel adapter they quickly lent us one for free. Having a spa in the room was convenient. But the tap and shower kept running and had low pressure, and the room wasn’t soundproof at all, so we could hear everything outside. The lighting was too dim. On the second day, staff only made the bed and took out the rubbish, without sweeping or mopping. They left us a dirty towel that didn’t absorb water.

The location opposite Thamrin City was good, but the rooms were in bad condition. We’d booked three nights and left the next morning. The reception officer didn’t ask why. Getting a refund online for the two unused nights took a lot of follow-up, but they eventually agreed to return the money.
