Abian Biu Mansion by Zen Rooms

The room floor was filthy. After walking barefoot our feet turned black, and although reception said they'd clean it while we were out, there was still dust left when I checked with my finger. The hotel feels like an old property, and there was painting work underway, which we didn't mind since we only needed somewhere to sleep near the places we planned to visit on our last day. The price is cheap, but still too high for what you get. There was also odd Chinese art and symbolism around. Staff were polite and smiling, but that didn't make up for it. A waste of time and money, so don't be taken in by the Airbnb photos.

The standard double I booked was run-down and poorly maintained. The floor felt dusty and greasy, the kettle was badly stained and didn't seem clean enough to use, and the sheets may not have been changed. I felt itchy after the first night.

The restaurant seemed underused, but the food was very good, and I especially liked the nasi goreng. Breakfast came in American or Indonesian styles. During our 7-night stay, we had spacious, clean rooms and excellent beds, plus air conditioning that got ice cold. The staff were cheerful, polite, and helpful. Some minor woodwork upkeep would be good. I'd stay again.

The surrounding area is pleasant, with rice fields behind and friendly staff. The room itself was just okay, and the toilet smelled around the clock. There are plenty of other budget places in Umalas with much better facilities.
