The place feels wonderfully secluded, though bustling Bajo is only a short boat ride away, and we thought it offered excellent value. After staying at the neighboring resort the year before, we tried this one and were just as impressed. Our Canopy villa was simple, rustic, clean, and comfortable. It was a few metres from the beach and felt more private than the beachfront villas. The resort never seemed crowded. The pool is charming and partly shaded, with a lovely position looking out to sea. The water is crystal clear, with glorious views of distant islands and neighboring shores. There’s a spectacular reef with just about every kind of marine life you could hope to see, and the healthy coral makes snorkeling excellent. The shaded pods along the jetty are great for relaxing and watching the views and sea life below. You can also take day trips, paddleboard, snorkel, or go for local walks. Jogging at dawn from the end of the beach path along the jetty is a fantastic way to see the sunrise, and there’s a shaded outdoor calisthenics gym. Manta restaurant is a magnificent architectural creation, beautifully furnished to suit its “barefoot luxury” feel, with outstanding views. The food was very good for an island, and the bar was good too. Staff were all incredibly friendly and helpful, and seemed to know when to give you space instead of hovering. The one small downside is that Wi-Fi is available only at Manta restaurant. We’ll definitely be back.

The reef, corals, and fish were fabulous for snorkeling, and the resort staff did everything they could to make us feel looked after. We spent four days in the nice beachfront bungalows after three days and two nights aboard Phinisi Dalliance, which is owned by the resort. The crew and our guide Alex were outstanding and made the boat trip a wonderful memory for the whole family. We had seven wonderful days at Seraya Resort and would highly recommend it, especially the combination of the boat trip and resort. Thanks for a lovely family holiday!

The food was excellent, especially the vegetarian choices, and the huts have a lot of charm, though some are beginning to show their age. The staff are genuinely friendly and try hard to help, but service can be passive. They rarely ask if you want more food or drinks, so you usually have to go to them. The underwater life is as good as the resort advertises, but after storms, large amounts of rubbish wash ashore every few days. The team does try to clean it up, though not enough in my view. I found myself picking trash off the beach and even the coral reef because I couldn’t relax with so much pollution around. It was disappointing that building new tourist huts seemed to get more attention than dealing with this ongoing environmental problem sustainably. We also had trouble with the transfer. A flight delay meant we missed the 2:00 PM one, leaving us to arrange our own journey or pay for an overpriced private transfer through the resort. That felt inflexible. When we arrived, we had to carry all our luggage to the resort ourselves. Without the waste issue, this would be close to paradise, if you’re willing to pay the price.

The house reef was a real gift. We made a ritual of snorkeling from the pier, where we saw healthy coral, turtles, baby sharks, and a calm underwater world so close to shore. Kayaking, paddleboarding, and trips around Komodo were easy to arrange and well organized. The Seraya is a quiet, authentic island sanctuary, where nature sets the pace. The team is warm, attentive, and caring, making you feel welcome while still giving you room. The bungalows fit into the landscape with natural materials and simple, deliberate design. Food is fresh and tasty, served in a friendly, home-like atmosphere. The evenings are especially peaceful, with a stillness that feels natural. Island life has a few rough edges. Wi-Fi is barely available, which fits the idea of disconnecting but is still worth knowing. Water pressure can vary, the restaurant menu is limited, some activities may feel overpriced, and breakfast portions may seem small if you expect a buffet. These weren’t deal-breakers for me. I’d happily return for the ocean, simplicity, and quiet beauty, rather than luxury in the classic sense.

A month after leaving Indonesia, I’m still thinking about this place. It may be one of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed in. The best part was waking up, walking along the sand under the coconut trees to the pontoon, then diving off the end straight into a crowd of hundreds of tropical fish. The resort has its own reef just off the beach, and two islands are an easy kayak away for even more of that tropical feeling. Everyone on staff was welcoming, friendly, and helpful. Cell reception on the island is poor, but there’s a good Wi-Fi spot at the restaurant, just enough to let you disconnect. I’d highly recommend it.
