Semalam at Sun Yat Sen - Self Check In - Hostel

The design space looks phenomenal, clearly put together by a cool designer. The beds are super clean and give you great privacy, and there's a nice kitchen area with a kettle. Staff are friendly and check-in is easy, including checking yourself in. It's very close to good food, and anything else is just a Grab ride away for very little. Amazing hostel.

The owner helped me with everything I needed, from getting around to finding food. We talked on WhatsApp, and he told me the place used to run lots of activities and a cafe, which had to stop because of Covid. He plans to bring them back. The hostel itself is comfortable, cozy, clean, and affordable, with all the facilities I think a hostel needs. It's self check-in at the moment, which felt a little odd until I understood the process. I had such a good experience. Thank you!

The hostel felt really dull, with empty spaces and no atmosphere, and we were disappointed. There was no window in the room, and there wasn't enough toilet paper. We also arrived to a locked door with no code because we hadn't been told that check-in was self-service. The Wi-Fi network listed on the door didn't exist. Luckily, Riche brew, a very good coffee shop across the road, had Wi-Fi, so we could contact the hostel staff and get inside. If we'd arrived later and the coffee shop had been closed, I wouldn't have known what to do. I later saw the same issue mentioned in other reviews, but it seems the owner hasn't addressed it.

Stayed in August 2022. Check-in was easy, the place was reasonably clean, quiet, and affordable. It's a little far from the city center, but you can walk 2km to Stasiun medan or take local transport, which cost me 20k IDR. There's no proper parking spot, and I didn't check the other facilities. I'd stay for one night.
