We paid 165K IDR for one night and got a smelly room with a broken TV and dirty toilet. We asked to switch rooms, but the aunty at the counter said none were available. So we didn’t stay another night and went to find another hotel.

A basic Indonesian budget hotel: for 80000 IDR we got a room with a double bed, small table, and attached bathroom. We were on the top floor, where part of the roof outside the rooms was like a terrace with somewhere to sit. Being right next to Mesjid Raja isn’t ideal, but it wasn’t actually that noisy, even during Ramadan.

At just IDR 70k a night for a non-air-conditioned room, it’s dirt cheap. The water smelled and tasted strange, maybe because the place is near welding workshops. You can’t expect more for that price. It’s close to the grand mosque and Maimun Palace, and Chinatown isn’t far either. A decent base for seeing the city.

For £3.50, or 70,000, I got a small, dirty, hot room on the fourth floor. The bathroom was tiny, with a Western toilet but no seat. There were holes in the windows, so mosquitoes could get in, and there was no Wi-Fi in the room. The mosque is next door. On the top floor there’s a roof where you could dry clothes or maybe take photos.

Big bed, cheap, and quiet, but it wasn’t very clean. For the budget, it was comfortable overall.
