Bromo Sunrise Homestay

The dorm was empty while I was there, so I more or less had a private room with a fan and air conditioning. I found the price really tempting, and the stay worked out well for me. The sheets could have been cleaner, though.

For the price, the basic accommodation is fine. Just be aware that a mosque is right beside it, and the call to prayer can wake you at 3 a.m. That could work as an alarm if you're heading to see the sunrise at Mt. Bromo, about an hour away by bus.

The mosque next door woke me at 5 in the morning, and the prayers went on for nearly an hour. In most Jawa hotels, I suppose, that's how it is. The chanting sounded so lovely that it almost lulled me back to sleep, so I was happy to stay a second night on my way back from Bromo. I stayed in better hotels during my five weeks in Jawa, but at this price, this one was easily the best value for money. It's a long way from the train station and Probolinggo center, though handy if you're passing through by bus or taking a Bromo van. The bus terminal is about 1 km away, around a 15-minute walk. Tip: wave down any bus going along the road to skip the walk. Cleanliness was up to standard, and the room had its own bathroom with a shower and toilet, despite the low rate. The water wasn't hot, but in the July heat I didn't need warm water anyway. The ceiling fan worked well. I also liked the benches along the outside corridor and the little supermarket next to the hotel. That's why I felt it deserved five stars for its excellent value.

The outdoor space has a cozy feel, and you can use the kitchen. They also sell great Bromo coffee beans. A really good, clean place to stay at an affordable rate while passing through Probolinggo.
