The food alone was far better than what I usually found in Raja Ampat, with proper meals at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, generous portions, and everything tasty. The family are really welcoming and speak English, and the price feels fair. Rooms are pleasant, with beds and hammocks, and the tiled bathrooms are clean. Two rooms have their own bathrooms with showers. It’s a quiet, remote spot where it’s easy to unwind for a few days. Mobile internet only works if you use the owner Noldi’s hotspot a few minutes up the hill. I’ve stayed in six places in Raja Ampat, and this was my favorite, just as the name promises. The best snorkeling I found for fish, rather than coral, was by nearby Sawandarek village. There were loads of turtles, blacktip sharks, and schools of fish including barracudas. I even saw mantas once. You can swim about 1 km to Sawandarek if you’re a strong swimmer with fins, though there’s some current at the edge of the bay. It’s a 20-minute walk through the jungle, or Noldi can take you by boat. The snorkeling right in front of the homestay is only so-so by Raja Ampat standards, and getting in and out is tricky at low tide. That may be the one downside. I hope to return and see the place grow slowly without becoming another Kri.
I had a terrible stay and left after one night. A French couple also left after a single night. I also suspect some of the reviews here are fake: Noldy, the owner, posted a five-star review himself. The main issue was a dive with Noldy on his own house reef, which I expected him to know well. He seemed inexperienced, and the equipment wasn’t right. He borrows gear from a friend rather than running a proper dive center, and gave me short snorkeling fins, no reef hook, and no pre-dive briefing. The current was among the strongest I’ve encountered in 30 Raja Ampat dives. Noldy was grabbing coral with his bare hands to avoid being swept away. Fortunately, another guest had a spare reef hook I could use during the dive. When Noldy released the SMB “diver below” float, the reel string slipped from his hand. I came away thinking he didn’t have much diving experience. It was a very dangerous dive. I wouldn’t recommend this place. There were other problems with my stay that I haven’t gone into.
For booking, send an SMS or Messenger message since the phone signal is really weak. I’ve stayed at 11 homestays in Raja Ampat over the past six years, and Noldy and his wife made the best food I’ve ever had. Their rooms were the most comfortable too.
Such a lovely spot for diving and snorkeling, and one that really deserves to be preserved. Noldy was our host, and a welcoming woman there offers a bed and cover for a small fee.
The food was made with love, and the homestay itself was clean, comfortable, and good. We went on a tour all around raja ampat with Weldy, the owner and also a guide. He’s a really nice guy. Thanks for everything.
