Vogels Hostel

Christian is such a lovely person, and it's easy to see why he enjoys living up there. Years ago, he was on seven different vessels that sank at sea. The staff were wonderfully welcoming, and the Volcanologists hill was incredible for photos. Get there quickly, since the clouds move fast! I last visited 37 years ago, but Kaliurang and Christian are still close to my heart. It's the one place in the world I'd love to see again. Such a peaceful spot.

Christian was the highlight of our three days there. He's attentive, knows so much, and shared loads of information and tips about Merapi. The rooms are basic and the water only lukewarm, but the food is great too 👍. Please stay here if you can, so he can put some money back into the place after the pandemic hurt business.

The rooms are simple and very cheap, and the Cafe serves great food. We had the paniki, which was awesome, and lunch after the trek was perfect. Christian and his brothers know the Mt merapi trails well. The morning route isn't difficult and passes around Mt.merapi and important viewpoints from the 2010 eruptions. They have plenty of stories about the area and its history.

The hostel feels cozy, with lots of books and memories around, and the lunch was delicious. I didn't stay overnight, just joined the Merapi tour. It was cloudy early on, but the sky cleared soon and the majestic mountain came into view. Both brothers are very kind, and their stories about the volcano were fascinating.
