Kampoeng Djawa Guesthouse

I've been coming back almost every year since my first stay nine years ago in Jogja. It's a traditional-style hotel in a great spot, peaceful and relaxed. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the rooms are clean, though the bathrooms could use an upgrade. Parking can be tricky because the street is narrow. The WiFi has always been poor and is nearly unusable sometimes.

I really enjoyed the handmade feel and the little garden in the middle of the hotel. It's simple, pleasant, affordable for a few days, and close to restaurants, coffee bars, and other places. The breakfast was disappointing, though. I also have to say there wasn't a single woman on the hotel staff, which felt awkward as a woman traveling alone when I needed something.

The guesthouse has an ethnic design and a small green garden in the center. My room didn't have AC, but I still didn't feel hot. The room was clean and smelled nice, and the bathroom was pleasant and functional. Staff were helpful, caring, and very nice. There's free self-service coffee and tea every day. I'm already missing the place and want to stay again next time.

The price for what you get is great, and the rooms are clean and quiet with a lovely backyard. WiFi worked fine. Breakfast is basic, alternating between toast and rice. The staff are friendly, though conversation is mostly limited to small talk. There's a mosque nearby, so expect a brief interruption to your sleep in the morning.
