What stayed with me most about Lorong Homestay was how welcoming everyone was. From the caretakers at the homestay and gallery to the baristas at Saorsa Kopi (Selatan), and the folks up Jl Nitiprayan at Kedai Blirik, everyone made me feel at home and part of the Lorong and Jl Nitiprayan community. Kedai Blirik was my favorite breakfast place. For dinner, Pecel Lele Pojok 10, Mas Rian and Mas Wamang's warung beside Saorsa Kopi (Selatan), is worth a visit. It opens from 17.00 WIB, serves delicious food, and has Vegetarian options too. I stayed in Mbilun, one of two separate rooms in a cottage in the first building. The homestay has two buildings, with rooms named after Punakawan characters from Javanese Wayang (Shadow Puppetry) tales. Both are behind Saorsa Kopi (Selatan) and Galeri Lorong. I chose the place because of its architecture, then was surprised that my room never felt humid. It only had a fan, but the tiled floors, high ceilings, and open vents kept things cool, and I didn’t have any mosquito problems. The setting among the paddy fields in this beautiful part of South Jogja (Jogja Selatan or Jogsel) was lovely too. The homestay is operated and cared for by a wonderful team.

I really enjoyed staying here. The homestay is in Bantul, on the outskirts of Yogyakarta, amid local homes with a sugarcane plantation nearby. There’s an art gallery on the second floor at the front, and two to four other galleries in the area to wander around. The building is thoughtfully designed to suit its surroundings and materials. Air moves through it so well that I didn’t need air conditioning. The people were friendly and helpful, and the peaceful atmosphere made this a lovely place to spend time.

The building and rooms have a design I really liked. There’s no air conditioning, just a fan, but I never felt too hot. They also have guardian cats.

Fresh, natural, and peaceful. I found it comfortable for a proper rest, or for work that needs full concentration.
