Ndalem Gamelan Guesthouse

The hosts are friendly, the furniture is nice, and the location is great for exploring the city. The bathroom is very basic, though. It would be nice to offer filtered water so guests could refill bottles instead of continually buying plastic ones, especially with Indonesia’s plastic waste management issues. The shampoo could also come in a refill bottle rather than small plastic ones. Otherwise, it’s a good address for discovering the city.

We had a lovely stay here a long time ago. What we liked most was the building itself. It’s quiet and peaceful, and we slept well in the middle of a big city. 🤘

We spent five nights here and found it wonderfully peaceful. The bed was very comfortable, and the small bathroom worked perfectly well. Each morning our warm, thoughtful hostess brought coffee and tea, helped us arrange laundry, and shared local restaurant tips without ever being intrusive. The house is a lovingly cared-for traditional Javanese home, run by a family, with just five rooms, striking antique furniture, and a calm garden. Its spot inside the Kraton makes it easy to reach the Sultan’s Palace, Water Castle, Alun Alun Kidal night food market, Malioboro, Fort Vrederberg Museum, and Beringharjo market on foot or by a short becak ride. For the price, it’s ridiculously good value. A real gem in Jogya’s historic center.

The room was spacious and quiet, with gamelan instruments adding a lovely touch. It costs a little more than nearby places, but I felt it was worth every rupiah. The woman who welcomed us was so kind and helped us a lot, including saving us plenty on transport and taxis.
