Avondale is what it claims to be, a bed and breakfast, and a good fit if you want somewhere simple and affordable rather than a fancy hotel. I personally don't like sharing rooms with strangers, so this suited me better than a hostel. The staff were polite and helpful. I had a huge suitcase and had booked a room on the second floor, but at check-in the receptionist moved me to the first floor, which was handy and made me feel safer travelling alone, closer to reception in case anything happened. The building is old and has no lift, so be ready for stairs. The room was tiny, but enough for two people and their luggage. Sheets and pillows were clean, and there was a sink and mirror for washing up. The shower in the bedroom was really good. The toilet was shared, but clean and tidy. Breakfast was good, traditional Irish food, and the breakfast room was clean and organized. The location is good, near tourist spots and right across from a bus stop that's practical for getting to the airport.

The only thing going for it was being close to everything in the city. The building looked ready to fall apart, there was no elevator, and everything in the toilets was broken. It was far too hot in the room, so we had to sleep with the window open, but the busy city noise made that impossible. The rooms were terrible and ridiculously expensive: a room with one bed for two cost 80-90€/person. And every time you went out, you had to hand your key back to reception. They didn't check anyone's ID, so anyone could walk in and get a key. I wouldn't recommend it.

We could walk to Dublin's main attractions pretty easily, and the river was only five minutes away. Breakfast was good: the 'full Irish' came with sausages, beans, bacon, egg and toast, plus tea, coffee, and orange juice. Our room, though, was in poor condition and very noisy. It was at the front beside reception, so we heard the entry bell every time someone rang for access, day and night.

I visited in August 2018 and it was just terrible. The place was dirty, dark, and smelled bad, with dusty rooms, dirty walls, and a hole in the bathroom. I hardly ever feel like everything I touch is that disgusting. Breakfast was awful too, served in a windowless basement room. The staff weren't rude, but they were far from friendly or helpful. Don't go.

A great base for visiting Dublin, with an affordable price, nice rooms, and a handy location. It's very close to the main avenue where you can catch the hop on hop off bus tours, with supermarkets and plenty of cheap food nearby. The staff are lovely, and breakfast is simply delicious. I'll definitely come back.
