The Sweeney Mongrel had a nice atmosphere and pleasant staff, but the bouncer treated me terribly. I’d gone downstairs to use the bathroom. When I came back up, he blocked me with his arm and asked, “Where do you think you’re going?” I told him I was returning to my table, but he said, “No you’re not!” and pushed me out. He wouldn’t let me back inside, so my two friends and I had to leave. I think he mistook me for someone coming in from outside. It should have been clear I’d already been in there: my coat was on a table and my friends were still inside. Even then, he wouldn’t admit he’d made a mistake. Dublin pubs need to get rid of bouncers like this.

I’ve been barred, and I’m sure it was because I wasn’t drinking. A couple of years ago I was diagnosed with a stomach condition that means I can’t drink alcohol. I haven’t been involved in any fights or even a heated argument. The closest thing to trouble around me was a mild debate about the day’s topic, and I haven’t even seen trouble on the nights I was at Sweeney’s. I go there to spend time with friends, and I think this is a terrible way to run a pub. It seems to happen on busy nights, when they turn away people based on how they look if they aren’t drinking. Half the customers don’t buy anything anyway. As someone who avoids alcohol for medical reasons, being barred for not drinking is an absolute disgrace. If anyone says that wasn’t why I was barred, I promise it was. I’ve only been in the city for three months, and I’m outraged. This would be a five-star review if not for management, at least according to the bouncers.

A great spot to meet people, with loads of good music, craic, and some of Dublin’s best people around. Check it out soon, though, since unfortunately they have to close at the end of June.

The bar looks cool, with trendy staff and a hipster crowd, but service was slow. On a Sunday evening it took ten minutes to get served, even though it wasn’t that busy. There were three staff behind the bar, but only one seemed to be serving while the others chatted.
