I’m from Monaghan and have gone to the westenra for years. It used to be my favourite place here for pub grub, but the food has gone way downhill. The chicken in my wrap was rock hard, and the wrap had no sweet chilli in it. It was supposed to come with fries, but the type wasn’t specified. There were three kinds on the menu, all €5: house fries, sweet potato fries, and rosemary and sea salt fries. I ordered the rosemary and sea salt ones, which cost the same as house fries, but they were just fries with what seemed like ordinary salt. I grow rosemary in my garden and use it regularly in cooking, and there was none on the fries. I was charged €5 for the fries even though they were supposed to come with the wrap. I complained at the till, but the girl didn’t want to know. It’s such a pity, because I always used to recommend the westenra. Today’s food, service and treatment left a very bad taste in my mouth. It’s gone way downhill, and I wouldn’t recommend it to a friend.

My daughter had her Formal on Thursday night. I arrived early to collect her and saw the door men walking all the young people to the car park and making sure they had a lift. That was excellent customer care. As a parent, I can only praise the staff and door staff for looking after everyone’s safety.

Staff were extremely friendly and made the experience even better. We were both impressed by the attention to detail. I had a simple club sandwich for lunch, and my girlfriend ordered the cessat wrap. The coleslaw and dressing on the side salad went together so well. Can’t recommend enough.

The early check-in was the one positive, but we had a very disappointing stay. I couldn’t sleep because noise from the nightclub and street went on until 3.15 am, and there was noise on the hotel stairs too. I emailed reception at 2.30 am and got no response, even the next morning. Room 201 isn’t suitable for sleeping on a Saturday night, and THE HOTEL MUST KNOW THIS! The room had no ventilation, the toilet didn’t flush properly, and the shower extractor fan wasn’t working. At breakfast, the continental bar was empty and needed restocking. Lots of tables hadn’t been cleared, so none were available, and staff were very busy. I asked to speak to the manager at checkout, but he wasn’t available. I was told he’d contact me, but he didn’t. Ignored again. Not a great recommendation.

Please show your staff how to pour a Guinness into a clean, dry glass. So many bar staff use a wet glass, or hopefully not a greasy one. It’s not hard.
