Conyngham Arms

I’m incredibly disappointed and frustrated. I booked weeks ahead for our group of nine, for the last day of what had otherwise been a wonderful trip, and received several confirmation emails. When we arrived, somehow only my room wasn’t ready. The receptionist asked me to wait, but we were already late for our van to the museum. She then said my room was ready before we left, so I told her I’d collect it when we got back. Three hours later, a young man at reception said there was no room for me at that hotel and sent me to the Old Post Office building across the street. He claimed Booking.com sometimes changes venues without notice. I’ve worked with Booking.com for years and had never heard of that happening. I was exhausted, frustrated, and close to tears. The room he gave me there was tiny. I went back and said I absolutely wouldn’t stay in it. One of our friends, who had no reservation beforehand, apparently got a room while I’d been told mine was waiting to be cleaned. After I insisted, the receptionist gave me room 13, the smallest and most uncomfortable room I’ve ever slept in. It was probably under 10m2. I paid the same as my friends, actually more than the price shown on Booking.com, but they had lovely rooms with double beds, closets, and an entrance area. I got a tiny attic room with a bed that was impossible to sleep in. This ruined the final day of my 16-day trip when I was already worn out. The food staff were friendly, but the reception handling and unprofessionalism spoiled my whole stay. Never again!

The location worked well, with all three local pubs on the same street, and breakfast had a nice range of choices. Still, we probably wouldn’t return after such a poor night’s sleep. A large green emergency light in the room kept us awake. At checkout we were told they’re in every room, so I’d suggest bringing an eye mask if you stay.

There were 20 of us for dinner last night, and everyone was really impressed. The beef was incredible, and the service was A1. I’d recommend this place to anyone.

Sam was especially kind and attentive to the details during our very enjoyable overnight visit. We were back to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary, and we’ll return.
