The view from the homestay is in the video I uploaded, but the stay itself didn’t work for us. There were lots of mosquitoes, the food felt overpriced, and the choices were limited to village-style food. There’s no restaurant or cafe nearby. We’d hoped to cook for our child, but the kitchen was too small, and the bathroom was unhygienic. You also have to duck to get through the low room doorway, or you’ll hit your head.

I spent two weeks here and really enjoyed the calm setting. The Himalayan views are stunning, with a pine forest walkway and plenty of birds around. The host was friendly and helpful, and shops and hotels are about a five-minute walk away.

The Himalayas look fantastic from the road just across from the room. This is a peaceful, cozy mud-house for a couple, with a lovely verandah only three steps from the road. It’s right on the road and just 5 km from Kasar Devi temple. The private place is well equipped, and the hosts, Mr Mayank Karki and Mr Narendra Mehta, take care of what you need. The authentic Kumaoni meals are cooked to order, and Mayank can also arrange customized hikes in the Kumaon hills. Binsar Reserve Forest is a few km away. It made for a wonderful, relaxed homestay and was absolutely good value, though it can’t accommodate more than a couple.

The mountain and green tree views are lovely, and the place is quiet, which is what I wanted. But yesterday the cook came around four times banging on the door of the next room, which was empty. Staff also kept peeping into my room. I counted six times yesterday, and even after I asked them to stop, the owner came in while I was sleeping and said, “you are sleeping inside”. I leave the windows open for fresh air and the views, but that doesn’t make this okay. We’d agreed on about Rs 13000 for 14 days. I was charged Rs 15000, plus Rs 150 for a dinner I hadn’t ordered that he said he was “offering” me, and Rs 1200 for a room for the driver who brought me, which I hadn’t asked for. The actual total was about Rs 17500 for the 14 days.

Sharda Stays feels like its own kind of getaway, especially if you’re not looking for a standard guest house. It’s pet-friendly, with big views all around and a front yard for daytime sunbathing or evening bonfires. The mud-house studio has a basic kitchen and bathroom, plus a kitchen garden. Our hosts were kind and helpful, making an effort to keep us comfortable without intruding. Definitely a unique place.
