Baruah Bhavan

The inside of this old bungalow is beautiful, but for 3k a night I didn't feel the stay was worth the price. It seems the money goes toward maintaining the heritage property rather than providing service. There's a lot listed in the room rules, but the staff were talking loudly on the roof at 11 p.m., despite the rule against loud noise after 10. In a homestay, you can hear what's going on outside your room. The property is in old Guwahati, where there are plenty of eateries and a market within walking distance, though getting there can be difficult because the area is often jammed. Breakfast was supposed to start at 7 a.m. according to the instructions, but they began serving at 8. The only choices were bread and omelette. In the bathroom, the warm water came out so slowly that filling half a bucket took 20 minutes. The room lamps had bulbs but didn't work.

We only stayed a night while travelling on to Arunachal, but this lovely place deserves more time. The furniture is lovely, and Banita and her staff made us feel so welcome. The food was lovely too.

The rooms have a distinctive, attractive style, and the food is freshly home-cooked and very tasty. Baruah Bhavan by Axom Inn Heritage is a well-known, well-maintained guest house, with excellent service and a calm, peaceful setting surrounded by greenery.

You can walk to several cafes and a riverside park from this beautiful home in a great location. The host was terrific, and home-cooked food is available. It gave me a real feel for Assam during my stay. Highly recommend.
