Evenings in the common space were my favorite, cooking and relaxing with guests who had come to Ghotul hoping to find a home away from home. People respected the 10 pm no loud music rule and kept the shared spaces clean. I stayed for 3 nights with Shivani, a good friend from my college days at IIT Kharagpur. She’s welcoming and often joins the evening conversations and jam sessions. Ghotul has a lovely 90s nostalgic feel, with humble architecture in a quiet lane, but the main streets, mall, and eateries are easy to reach on foot. It felt safe for female travellers, and Shivani is happy to suggest local food, day trips, and shopping spots. We made a couple of short outings, including Kamakhya Devi temple, about 20mins by auto, and Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, about 1hr by car. Try the Missing thali, around 800m away on foot. Couples who’d rather not stay in a hostel can choose a private room. I’d recommend Ghotul to anyone visiting Guwahati alone or in a group, for one night or a few days exploring the Northeast.

The hosts made us feel welcome right away, with fresh Air and a cozy blanket on a chilly evening. The family were attentive and friendly, shared local tips, and cooked delicious homemade meals. You can also cook for yourself. We stayed at “Ghotul Hostel &Homestay” in Guwahati for three nights. My room was clean, and the big party hall had lovely sunrise views over the terrace. The bed was comfortable and the Wi-Fi was fast, handy for catching up on travel logs. It’s a scenic spot, just a short walk from the trailhead. The stay felt like being with relatives, and it made a welcoming, authentic base for exploring the region. Highly recommended if you want a personal touch.

From the moment I arrived, the friendly, helpful staff made me feel at home and were ready to assist with whatever I needed. The rooms were clean, the atmosphere peaceful, and the stay was very comfortable. Ghotul Hostel has a warm, welcoming vibe that works well for solo travellers and groups. It was a wonderful stay, and one of the best hostels in Assam.

My experience with the owner was very bad. During a long stay, there were repeated issues with the rent and unexpected problems. When I raised anything, she spoke rudely and disrespectfully. I haven’t seen such poor behavior from a hostel owner. She acts sweet on the surface, but her attitude and way of thinking seem very low. What she presents outwardly feels completely different from who she is inside.
