Periyar Riverview Homestay

It’s surprising Periyar Riverview Homestay isn’t a more popular place to stay when visiting Okkal or nearby Kalady. The two cottages sit right by the river, though getting to the water means going outside the property and is at your own risk. It’s a lovely spot, and I think the owner lives in the house next to the cottages. Arun sorted out breakfast and explained that the choices were limited. That was fine, though I’d have liked an option to pay extra for a better breakfast with tea or coffee. Getting a rick or Uber from there was tricky, and it’s about 2 km from the main road. I still had a pleasant stay.

I stayed at Periyar Homestay for three months while working on my writing, and it was tough to leave. From the cottage, you look out over the river and forest, and there’s a little wooden balcony that’s lovely for morning coffee and watching the water go by. The garden is private and secluded, with trees and flowering shrubs all around. Everything was spotlessly clean and had what I needed. The family and Arun were warm, welcoming, and helpful, and the home-cooked breakfasts were delicious. It’s a quiet, green place despite being close to Kochi and other major Kerala attractions. The airport is just fifteen minutes away, and transport to and from it is provided. I’m looking forward to coming back.

The unit was spacious and clean, with a lovely river view. There’s a kitchenette with tea, coffee, and a fridge, and the people were very friendly. It’s close to the airport, which is convenient, though you can sometimes hear jets. It’s also in a residential area, with the nearest food about 1 km away. They do deliver food.

A lovely river-view room in a very peaceful place. The owner is kind and helpful, and I really appreciated the hospitality. Breakfast didn’t have much variety, but it was homemade and so enjoyable that I stopped thinking about the limited choices. I’d definitely recommend it to friends.
