The hotel is an oasis amidst today's hectic and maddening lifestyle. When the sky is clear, the imposing peaks of the Kanchenjunga mountains can be spotted past the rolling blue-green hills. The bracing mountain air adds to the flavours of the Darjeeling tea, which guests may sample while sitting in one of the quaint gazebos that dot the sloping gardens. Facilities on offer at the hotel include a café, a bar, a restaurant, a conference room, a currency exchange facility, and a hotel safe. Room and laundry services are offered, and there is parking available for those arriving by car. The service and basic upkeep let down what could otherwise be a standout stay. Staff courtesy fell below expectations, and they often tried to steer us toward pre-prepared food instead of the à la carte menu. The restaurant washrooms were unusable during our stay: they smelled foul, had insects on the walls, urinal flushes that didn’t work, and muddy water under the basin. There’s a lot to admire at The Elgin Silver Oaks. The heritage character and ambience are remarkable, the room was one of our most beautiful of the trip, and the valley view made mornings lovely. Its main-road location was convenient for the Kalimpong market, and the restaurant food was good, with a spacious dining area. Historical pictures and atmospheric lighting along the corridors add to the charm.

I stayed at The Elgin Silver Oaks Heritage Resort & Spa, Kalimpong for two nights, on 18th and 19th October 2025. The old property is very well maintained, and the staff were kind and helpful throughout. Still, I left feeling undervalued and humiliated by the front desk manager’s attitude. It seemed to me that he valued foreign guests more than Indian guests. I’d booked a Deluxe Garden View room and a Premium Room with a balcony. The Deluxe Room assigned to my kids was beside a toilet, and its window looked out at a generator and the area where dogs were fed. When I raised the concern, the manager smiled and said we could move the next day because all the rooms were booked. The next day we were moved opposite a common toilet, which didn’t solve the problem. Yet that evening, dining staff said they were serving food by order because occupancy was low, and many rooms seemed vacant. Even offering us an upgrade, or the chance to pay extra for a better room, would have handled it gracefully.

The room window gave me one of the best mountain views I’ve seen across dozens of hotels. The location is excellent, and the place has a rich history and culture that the staff bring to life.

So cozy and Christmassy, I loved the fun feel of the place. I’d stayed here before, and it was just as delightful this time. It’s centrally located in a nice area.
