The LaLiT Great Eastern Kolkata

The pool was clean and a lovely place to relax, and the gym was well equipped. We had a spacious, nicely appointed room in the Edwardian block, with a large and very comfortable bed. My wife and I spent two nights here and thoroughly enjoyed it. Our package included breakfast and club lounge access, and I’d highly recommend both. The breakfast buffet had a huge variety and everything was excellent. Staff throughout the hotel were attentive, friendly, and helpful. A special mention to Amjad, who worked hard to make sure everyone in the restaurant was looked after. The club lounge opened in the evening, with tasty, good-quality snacks and complimentary cocktails. A first-class hotel, and one I’d happily recommend.

Inside the hotel, it feels like a different world from the dirty, narrow old lanes outside the gate. The property is around 200 years old and has plenty of history, but the hotel doesn’t really show it off. Nothing about its past came up at check-in, and there was no information leaflet for guests. When we asked, we were told the heritage tour was in the evening and cost 1000 pp+ tax. I’d suggest they offer it upfront and talk about their own property more. We stayed one night to watch a match at Eden gardens and were upgraded to a lovely, large room with comfortable beds. Breakfast was decent, though nothing special. We also saw some ICC officials staying there, so I assume it’s popular with foreigners who need to be in that area.

Breakfast brought a nice range of Indian and continental flavors, and the staff were quietly attentive. The rooms felt roomy and inviting, a comfortable place to retreat to. I also liked the generous reception space, with plenty of seating. The hotel has a lovely mix of old-world charm and modern comfort.

We picked The Lalit mainly because it’s close to Park Street and the metro, which made it easy to walk over and explore Kolkata. Staff were helpful from the moment they checked our luggage, and were always ready to answer questions or help us feel comfortable. The huge reception has a luxurious feel with local touches. Our corner twin room was quiet and private, with comfortable beds, working AC, and plenty of space. It was fresh and clean, and the bathroom was spot on. There was a locked connecting door that worried us briefly, but we learned access is only provided when families are staying next door together. We had a pleasant stay and would recommend it to people visiting Kolakta.
