Thapovan Heritage Home

Thapovan made our stay unforgettable, and I’m grateful to the whole team. The staff were kind and helpful, the therapists very competent, and Vijay’s yoga and meditation class was life-changing. We’ll be back soon. It was a peaceful retreat for authentic Ayurveda and good Ayurvedic food, far from the mass tourism resorts. I’d highly recommend it if you’re looking to disconnect and rejuvenate, and to feel physically and mentally reborn.

We only stayed briefly during our Kerala trip, and honestly, it was below average. There was loud music from a nearby temple when we arrived, which was seriously annoying. The hotel was completely empty, and I guess we were the only guests. We ordered bread, butter, and tea as an evening snack. It took forever to arrive, cost a bomb, and wasn’t worth it. Breakfast was decent, so that earned the two stars. Just so you know, this place seems more suited to meditation or getting away from everyday life, since there’s no TV or WiFi. Also, if anyone in your family has trouble walking or climbing stairs, I wouldn’t recommend booking here.

The two weeks we spent at Thapovan were peaceful, and we weren’t bothered by the nearby container harbour road work. Mr. Heitmann even offered to find us another place if it caused a disturbance, though we didn’t need to move. The resort feels more like a recreation centre than an ordinary hotel. Its grounds are well kept, with private bungalows tucked among the palms and air-conditioned cabins higher up with lovely views. We also appreciated the Ayurvedic treatments, given by practitioners who had passed their exams at the High School of Aryuvedic in Trivandrum, Keerala. The Yoga Teacher helped us understand yoga and meditation. There’s an Ayurvedic spirit to the place, without it feeling narrow or dogmatic. My wife, four friends and I visited in December 2015 and January 2016. Guests came from all over the world, and the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Food can take a little while because each meal is cooked after you order. Andreas Heitmann, the German owner, was generous with his help, and his knowledge of Indian culture and open-minded manner made us feel comfortable. Come here to feel at home in a paradise.

If you’re looking for a quiet place to reflect, Thapovan Heritage Home is a lovely choice. There’s no TV or other entertainment to distract you, and care has clearly gone into the landscaping. The sea is only metres away, and from Eagle's Nest you can fall asleep to the sound of the waves. The staff are kind and ready to help, and the Ayurveda Centre is wonderfully rejuvenating. I’d definitely come back when I get the chance.
